Who topical spironolactone is for
- Hormonal acne
- Jawline & chin breakouts
- Breakouts with your cycle
It may be a good fit if
- You are a woman with breakouts along the jaw, chin or neck
- Your breakouts tend to flare around your period
- You prefer a cream to a daily pill
Talk to your clinician first if
- You are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding: spironolactone is not used
- You are a man: it is not recommended
- You have kidney problems, or take potassium supplements or blood pressure medicines
- You have very sensitive or broken skin on the area
Your clinician decides whether a prescription is appropriate for you, or recommends another option.
A simple routine, set by your clinician.
Apply a thin layer
Once or twice a day as your clinician directs, on clean, dry skin over the areas where you break out.
Pair it wisely
It can be used with other treatments, such as tretinoin, if your clinician recommends it. Keep the rest of your routine gentle.
Be consistent
Hormonal breakouts come and go with your cycle, so it takes regular use over several cycles to judge how it works for you.
Check in
Your clinician follows up and adjusts your plan. Message them anytime if your skin feels irritated.
Always follow your clinician’s instructions and the pharmacy label. Individual results vary.

How compounded medications work
Compounded medications are prescribed for an individual patient by a licensed clinician after a medical assessment, and prepared by a state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy. They do not undergo FDA pre-market review or approval, and they may differ from FDA-approved drugs in effectiveness, safety and side effects. Results from clinical trials of FDA-approved medications should not be used to judge compounded medications.
Spironolactone tablets are FDA-approved for conditions such as heart failure, high blood pressure and edema; use for acne is off-label. Topical spironolactone 5% is compounded by a state-licensed 503A pharmacy, is not FDA-approved, and evidence for topical use is limited.
For adults 18 and older located in Florida.
Important Safety Information
Prescription only. Treatment is prescribed only if a licensed provider determines it is medically appropriate after reviewing your health history. A prescription is never guaranteed.
