Who tretinoin is for
- Acne
- Fine lines & wrinkles
- Rough texture
- Sun damage
It may be a good fit if
- You have breakouts, blackheads or clogged pores
- You see early fine lines, rough texture or sun damage
- You are ready to use it consistently, with sunscreen every morning
Talk to your clinician first if
- You are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding: tretinoin is not used
- You have eczema, a sunburn or broken skin on the area
- You already use another retinoid, or exfoliating acids
- You have very sensitive skin or rosacea
Your clinician decides whether a prescription is appropriate for you, or recommends another option.
A simple routine, set by your clinician.
Start slowly
At night, apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin, two or three nights a week at first, then more often as your clinician advises.
Keep it gentle
Use a mild cleanser and a moisturizer. Avoid the eyes, lips and the corners of the nose, and pause scrubs and exfoliating acids unless your clinician says otherwise.
Sunscreen every morning
Tretinoin makes skin more sensitive to the sun. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day, even when it is cloudy.
Give it time
Retinoids work gradually. Many people need 8 to 12 weeks of regular use, and skin can feel dry or flaky in the first weeks. Message your clinician anytime.
Always follow your clinician’s instructions and the pharmacy label. Individual results vary.

How compounded medications work
Compounded medications are prescribed for an individual patient by a licensed clinician after a medical assessment, and prepared by a state-licensed 503A compounding pharmacy. They do not undergo FDA pre-market review or approval, and they may differ from FDA-approved drugs in effectiveness, safety and side effects. Results from clinical trials of FDA-approved medications should not be used to judge compounded medications.
Commercial tretinoin up to 0.1% is FDA-approved for the topical treatment of acne; use for fine lines, texture or sun damage is off-label. Tretinoin 0.05% with sodium hyaluronate and tretinoin 0.2% are compounded by a state-licensed 503A pharmacy and are not FDA-approved.
For adults 18 and older located in Florida.

Serious warnings and precautions
- Sun sensitivity: tretinoin makes skin burn more easily. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) and protective clothing every day, and avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
- Skin irritation: redness, peeling, burning, or stinging can be strong, especially at higher strengths or when starting. Stop and contact your provider if irritation is severe.
- Avoid the eyes, lips, mouth, and the corners of the nose. Do not apply to broken skin.
- Wind and cold can make irritation worse.
Common side effects
Dryness, peeling, redness, stinging or burning, and sun sensitivity, mostly in the first weeks. Some people notice more breakouts at the start.
Drug interactions
- Other products that dry or irritate the skin (benzoyl peroxide, exfoliating acids, other retinoids, astringents, products with alcohol) can increase irritation. Tell your provider about everything you apply to your skin.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Do not use tretinoin during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. If you become pregnant, stop using it and contact your provider. Tell your provider if you are breastfeeding.
